So, yesterday, my friend surprised me and took me to the Welsh Mountain Zoo, in Colwyn Bay (where I also live) which happens to also be the National Zoo of Wales!. I sort of guessed before we got there but it was still a surprise and I was really excited, as I’m sure if you’ve looked at my Tumblr, you’ll see I love animals. And I guess you will also see I sort of like Snow Leopards, in a BIG way, and they have a beautiful pair there, so yeah, all in all, best day ever.
I sort of made a ridiculous ambition for myself to see and photograph every single animal they have there, and inevitably didn’t manage this, not just because we didn’t manage to get round everything, but also because some animals were in hibernation or otherwise just hiding. This included the elusive polecat, which I have never ever seen, and I must have been coming to this particular zoo since… well since not long after I was born probably! I was also disappointed with the Margay small cats and the Red Pandas, and after seeing a sign up saying the Ring-Tailed Lemurs were coming, I looked them up on the site tonight, and it said they were already there, just the viewing path wasn’t built yet, and that they also have Red-Fronted Lemurs. Not only this but of the two cameras we had, one kept saying ‘battery low’ and the other kept saying ‘memory full’, but I think I did really well for pictures considering the circumstances. Part of me also begun to wish the bars weren’t there, although that would obviously be problematic…
Anyway, what we did see was really amazing and exciting, and whenever I see live animals I just cannot get over how amazing they are, even the really shit ones as I told my friend! It was a really nice way to get to know her sister and husband better as well, who came with us, as did their baby (not the sister’s), who was so adorable in her pink outfit, but missed most of the day and slept, leaving us to lug her awkward pram around!
It was a nice change to when I’ve been to the zoo before because we went in March, it wasn’t too sunny and there weren’t a lot of people about, although this meant there weren’t a lot of zoo keepers for me to hassle with endless questions… It also meant the cafe and the shop were shut fairly early on, leaving us nowhere to change the baby.
As the Snow Leopards were my favourite, we went back to see them quite a few times, and when we went towards the end of the day, the two were separated and shut in their huts, leaving one to rapidly pace up and down looking for a way out for what must have been over ten minutes, or at least as long as we stayed to watch, and it got me thinking about the idea of animals in captivity. I know most of the animals in modern zoos are there because they’re endangered in the wild, and would probably have a short life there, but I did begin to wonder if such animals, especially big cats like the Snow Leopard and the Sumatran Tiger we saw would prefer to be roaming free with lots of space and have a shorter, yet fulfilled life, or to be protected and shut in at a zoo. I suppose at least it gives tourists the chance to see them as well as giving people who are interested a chance to learn more about them, why they’re endangered and what they can do.
Anyway, I was very happy and had a really amazing day, and I took a lot of pictures, some of which I was more than happy with, so here’s a selection of some of my favourites.
Here’s a link also to my album on Facebook, the album is public, though I don’t know if the link works…
Anyway, to anyone who reads this (my two followers so far, haha), hope you like the pictures! :)
